Reps Issue 24-Hour Ultimatum to WAEC Over Irregularities in Ongoing SSCE 2025
The House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies has demanded the urgent appearance of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) within 24 hours. This move comes amid disturbing reports of irregularities plaguing the ongoing 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) in Nigeria.
The directive was announced by the Committee Chairman, Hon. Oboku Abonsizibe Oforji, on Thursday, May 29, 2025. He expressed deep concern over WAEC’s failure to honour an earlier invitation issued on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.
According to Hon. Oforji, WAEC was expected to clarify several alarming issues affecting the exam’s administration across the country. “We’ve received credible reports indicating that students are sitting for papers as late as midnight in some centres. This level of chaos is unprecedented,” he stated.
WAEC had responded earlier on Thursday, citing their involvement in the conduct of the examinations as the reason for their absence—a justification the Committee found unacceptable.
“This is exactly why their presence is critical. The public deserves transparency, and affected candidates need reassurance that these problems will be resolved,” Oforji stressed.
The Committee has now rescheduled the hearing for Friday, May 30, 2025, warning that any further absence by WAEC would prompt the House to invoke its constitutional authority to compel attendance.
“Our goal is accountability, not punishment. WAEC must come forward to explain the irregularities and propose lasting solutions. They’ve been conducting exams for decades, but this year’s scenario is deeply troubling,” he added.
WAEC’s appearance is now seen as a crucial step toward restoring public confidence and safeguarding the integrity of future examinations.
